Young athletes are trained in the importance of teamwork, and following guidance and leadership. Participating in tournaments teaches healthy forms of competition and helps youth improve their social interactions, increase confidence, improve their skills, and improve their health. Kids play sports to have fun and be part of a group. They enjoy learning and bettering their skills, becoming fit, gaining recognition, and receiving praise for their accomplishments. Learning teamwork in tournaments is learning how to be a part of something bigger than themselves. It can be about giving your all. Sports can emulate life in general when kids learn about competition, loss, victory, trust, and respect for authority, as well as peers. When youth are confident they tend to have an easier time with social situations. Sports contributes to confidence since it allows them to bond with others and discover areas of mutual interest. Competition in youth tournaments is part of the youth sports experience. It builds a value in a competitive drive that can move kids to work on self improvement, dealing with mistakes, and facing challenges. Of course, good sportsmanship is an important part of healthy competition. Some kids are more naturally driven to participate in tournaments while others need gentle nudging. If properly encouraged, youth that are somewhat reticent should be provided with more guidance and supportive feedback. Youth sports provides that all-important need for regular exercise that’s good for the body and brain. Physical activity has the added benefit of boosting brain chemicals that reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and heighten feelings of wellbeing. Studies also show a reduced risk of smoking, alcohol and drug use in kids who play sports. Healthy life decisions in general often equate to maintaining healthy friendships and relationships with family. Participating in youth sports teaches kids how to achieve goals, and that’s not meant as a sports metaphor. Learning to focus attention while participating in sports is critical to maintaining motivation. Goal setting in youth sports offers direction in the short and long term. Increased motivation results in achieving more goals which results in the confidence to pursue even higher goals. As human beings, all like to constantly challenge ourselves to do more and do it better. Fortunately, for most youth who participate in sports tournaments it’s a lot of fun, and not just competition. In the long run, it could provide them with a lifetime love of physical activity and outdoor recreation. Most parents would probably agree that's time better spent than being glued to a cell phone, video games or a computer screen. When tournament time has ended, practice time can be a fun and healthy way to engage with family and friends without the competition factor. Loosen the rules and play sports at home. Overall, youth sports can be a positive force and help youths to become better contributors to society
