What is a coil spring? What is the exact role of coil springs in trucks? What are the features of RAM 2500 Rear coil springs? All these questions might be running inside the head when drive a truck. Let's get the answers now. A spring makes up for the irregularities on the road and maintains the suspension system. What is Coil Spring? Visualize a coil spring as a thin, long, and torsion bar wrapped into a coil. These coiled wires get twisted whenever the spring compresses or expands. It can say that the coil spring follows the same principle as a torsion bar. Coil springs occupy less space. That's why they can use various suspension system designs. Most of the modern trucks use the coil spring in place of the MacPherson strut design. The characteristics of coil springs include the diameter, length, and numbers of coils. At times, coil springs get designed as a variable-rate spring. It enhances the load-bearing capacity of the truck. Besides, they get used in a chassis configuration that rarely carries a heavy payload. How do springs work? Based on the sprung-to-unsprung weight ratio principle. Springs work. A farm wagon without springs represents 100% unsprung weight. Often springs get deployed between axles and the chassis. In that case, the ratio is 90% denoting the chassis weight and 10% for wheel and axle weight. When a truck speeds up, springs start to absorb the impacts. These impacts occur due to the irregularities on the road surface as the truck accelerates further, a stiffer spring springs into action. It keeps the wheels and axles in touch with the road surface. A compressed spring often extends drastically. So, shock absorbents get used to compensating for the spring's extension and compression. Suppose the violent cycle doesn't get dampened. The truck might lose control over off-road or a rough surface. RAM 2500 Rear coil springs There are three preconditions to use these real coils. What are they? 1) The centre-to-centre length of the Sway bar links must be 14" to 15". 2) The compressed length of Rear shocks should be 17.5" or lesser. 3) The extended length should bet be in the range of 26.5" to 28.5". Once the truck meets these conditions, it can use RAM 2500 real coil spring. Let's see what the features of these coil springs are. • 1" lift coils equal to 3/4"-1" lift on Quad Cab trucks, and 1/2"-3/4" lift on Mega Cabs, without having any lift on the Power Wagon. • These coils offer around 30-40% extra down travel than regular trucks. This is the reason why the trucks need to have longer sway bar end links. • 1/2" lowering coils equal to 1/2"-3/4" lowering on Quad Cab trucks, and 3/4"-1" lowering on Mega Cabs. The lowering comes to around 1-1/4" if they get used on the Power Wagon.
