Heavy duty coil springs are known for their promise of little to no maintenance. After people have heavy duty coil springs installed on a car or truck, it is easy to maintain them. They are a popular aftermarket upgrade which provides increased load capacity and a smoother ride, and they come with countless built-in benefits, as well. Heavy duty coil springs reduce wear and tear on a truck’s suspension, but it’s still worth pointing out tips to help maintain automatic coil spring systems. ms. If drivers frequently carry heavy loads, it puts more long term wear on thier coil springs. It’s just a simple fact that springs on trucks and other vehicles that carry heavy loads are replaced more often than unloaded passenger cars, for example. Try to avoid overloading a rig. Their chances of bottoming out with heavy duty coil springs are less likely since they sit higher and axles are more flexible. However, it certainly acts as a preventative measure to try and avoid driving over extremely bumpy roads with lots of potholes. Bouncing around haphazardly on worn-out suspension components, such as shocks or struts, can also shorten coil spring life, and can cause damage to a vehicle. Maintaining and/or replacing all worn suspension components is a valuable maintenance measure that will reward coil springs with longer lives. If the opportunity presents itself, weigh a vehicle at a public scale or recycling center. Then, people will know the real working weight of a vehicle which will ensure having the correct size spring for vehicles and not end up with a stiffer ride than necessary, or coils that aren’t strong enough to solve loading problems, such as sagging. Know the weight amounts that a vehicle is consistently carrying. This is especially true for motorhomes or trucks with diesel engines. Adding a snow plow, winch, brush guard, aftermarket bumper or other heavy accessory will increase carrying capacity and the need for additional support. Don’t end up “under-sprung!” Heavy duty coil springs are sized to fit particular makes and models of vehicles. For best performance, it is important to install springs that meet exact demands and specifications. Thicker coils offer greater benefit. Always replace coil springs in pairs. If only one spring is replaced, they will respond differently to the road. It is also recommended to add extended shocks for lifted trucks when a lifted coil is installed. It may be a good time to replace them while the front end suspension is being serviced. When drivers bring their rig in for regular service maintenance, have them inspect all the components related to springs. Ask them to check the shocks and struts, ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links, lug nuts, bolts, brake calipers and alignment. It doesn’t hurt to perform a wheel alignment whenever they modify any part of the suspension system, and specifically, when installing new heavy duty coil springs. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure.
