Oily skin is caused by the overproduction of the substance sebum, which is produced in the sebaceous glands. Dermatology treatments for controlling oily skin are typically related to the treatment for, and prevention of, acne. Acne occurs when hair follicles and glands become clogged with dead skin cells or oil. Genetics and hormones can also contribute to whether or not a person has oily skin. At home, treatments include regular face washing every morning, evening, and after heavy activity. However, overwashing may produce more oil because it stimulates oil production glands. Keeping skin moisturized also helps to produce less oil. Oily skin can lead to acne. It most commonly appears on the face, chest, and back, but can occur anywhere on the body where there are hair follicles. Many topical medications help with decreased oil production in the skin. Topical antibiotics, retinol, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide are just a few of the medications available by prescription from a dermatologist. Products with acids such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and beta-hydroxy acid help to cut oiliness. While marketed as acne treatments, they are also effective for oily skin alone. The best topicals inhibit sebum production and help to destroy bacteria associated with acne. Topical antibiotic treatments are available in creams, gels, lotions, and other solutions. Topical retinol gels or creams work to increase cell turnover to unblock pores. Many skincare regimens include a three-step cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Astringent toners can lead to more oil production and should only be used on oily areas of the skin known as the “T Zone” or forehead, nose, and chin. Most people have what is commonly referred to as combination skin - part oily and part dry. Dermatologists also offer other general treatments to reduce oiliness such as chemical peels and lasers which can help to improve the overall look of skin. In a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin which makes it blister and eventually fall off. The skin underneath is smooth, and when healed, improves the look and feel of the skin. Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck or hands, and can also be used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, freckles, acne, and mild scars. Laser dermatology treatments are also suitable for patients with oily skin. Studies have found significant reductions in sebum production after only a handful of treatments. Lasers are a cutting edge method of treatment that can reduce oil production, as well as reduce pore size, erase fine lines and improve skin texture. It works by gently resurfacing the top layer of the dermis, essentially replacing damaged skin with younger-looking tissue. It is non-invasive, and only takes about 30 minutes, and a topical numbing agent is applied. Most patients experience a warm tingling with little to no discomfort. Oily skin is a common dermatological concern and the demand for effective treatments is always advancing options. Many dermatological treatments for oily skin can give a more youthful, glowing, and refreshing appearance.
